Building Your Academic Support Toolkit Series

This series of workshops and panel discussions has been designed to educate the RIT community on our academic support services as well as create a meaningful dialogue surrounding some of our more commonly used tools for helping students.

Sessions:

Navigating Student Learning Support Services at RIT

Have you ever wondered where to send your students for extra academic help? Do you want to know more about the support programs offered through Student Affairs? Come and learn about what, where, and how students can receive extra academic support. This will include departments such as the Academic Support Center, TRiO Student Services, HEOP, Disability Services, AIM Program, and FYE.

Exploring Student Motivation

This workshop will examine college student motivation, discuss contributing factors, and provide a common language when helping students to identify strategies to overcome their motivation challenges. Participants will gain insight into how to turn students’ low motivation into a teachable moment.

Learning Theory Linked with Student Development

This interactive workshop examines how student development can impact higher learning by highlighting foundations of Perry’s Ethical and Intellectual Development juxtaposed with Bloom’s Taxonomy of Higher Learning. Participants have the opportunity to consider practical applications for use of Perry and Bloom to better inform their work and enhance the student experience.

Academic Strategies and the Study Process

Academic strategies are an essential piece of student academic success. Many of our students are not aware of the most efficient ways to approach studying. This session enhances our understanding of the study process and enables faculty and staff to encourage their students to utilize academic techniques and strategies to increase their ability to be successful. It also promotes the numerous resources and services that RIT has to offer to students to further their understanding of academic strategies and the study process.

Understanding the Accommodation Process for Students with Disabilities

In this workshop participants will gain information about the mission, functions and procedures of the RIT Disability Services Office (DSO). Information discussed will include how a student with a disability requests accommodations, how reasonable and appropriate accommodations are determined, as well as how the DSO test center works. The workshop will conclude with an opportunity for questions.

Gender in the Classroom: How does gender play a role in learning?

This interactive workshop is intended to familiarize participants with the role gender plays in academics. Participants examines comparative data and identify possible trends in their use of support services, and examine factors which interfere with academic progress. In addition, student self-efficacy development is explored with differences noted between male and female students. The workshop concludes with a review of available resources for RIT students.

Maximizing Office Hour Success

Student using office hours may come with a variety of challenges.  Whether they need a quick refresher on a concept, strategies for studying more successfully or help with managing their time, there are many resources to help them use their resources and reach their goals.
