Winter Break

Break Access Information

The End of Semester Winter Break Plan is now closed.

If you indicated you will not be circulating on campus over semester break or did not complete the Winter Break Form prior to December 21st, your card access is temporarily turned off until January 8, 2024

If you wish to return to your assignment prior to January 8, 2024 you must complete the self-check in process located in the myLife portal.

RIT Housing, including the residence halls, will remain open through the break between Fall Semester and Spring Semester.

All current students with a spring assignment will be automatically checked into housing on January 8, 2024 and access will be restored.

Self Check-In

RIT Housing will remain open through the break between Fall Semester and Spring Semester. Please follow the End of Semester and Winter Break instructions and guidelines carefully.

Not Returning to RIT Housing for Spring 2024

End of Semester Guidelines

Please complete the End of Semester - Winter Break Plan. If you are not returning to your RIT housing assignment for the spring semester, review the following:

  • If you are not returning to RIT for spring semester classes or do not plan on living in RIT housing for spring semester, you are required to check out of housing within 24 hours of your last final exam.
  • If you are not returning to RIT housing for the spring semester you must check out no later than 10:00 a.m. Thursday, December 21st.  You must remove all of your items and return your key before you leave.
  • If you do not check out and remove your items - RIT will not be responsible for packing, shipping, or storing belongings.

You must check out no later than 10:00 a.m. Thursday, December 21st.

  • Remove all of your items from your room.
  • Once you have moved all of your belongings out of your assignment, you must return the key to RIT Housing. Please place the key in one of the white key return envelopes and fill out the form on the front of the envelope (do not seal the envelope). RIT Housing is open 8 a.m.– 4:30 p.m. or you may return the key in our 24-hour drop box locations in Grace Watson hall or the Global Village Post Office. RIT does not accept keys returned by mail. There will be a $150 lock change fee for keys not returned at the time of move out.
  • Return your space to move-in condition.
  • Empty trash cans.
  • Properly store or remove all food items.
  • Close and lock windows.
  • Clean out the refrigerator/microfridge, if applicable.
  • Lock your suite/room door.

  • Fill out and submit an online forwarding address form at myLife.rit.edu.

Returning to RIT Housing for Spring 2024

End of Semester Guidelines

Please complete the End of Semester - Winter Break Plan. If you are returning to your RIT housing assignment for the spring semester, review the following:

  • Prepare your suite/room for a new roommate(s) no later than December 21st if your roommate(s) is moving out or already moved out or you have a current vacancy.
  • Empty trash cans.
  • Properly store or remove food items.
  • Close and lock windows.
  • Clean out the refrigerator, if applicable.
  • Lock your suite/room door.
  • Move all electronic equipment off the floor and unplug it.
  • Set your heater to automatic and set room temperature to 65 degrees. Do not remove HVAC covers or turn off the valves to the HVAC unit.

If your roommate(s) is moving out or already moved out, or you have a current vacancy, you may be assigned a new roommate(s) for spring semester. You are responsible for preparing the suite/room to accommodate your new roommate(s) and creating a welcoming environment and you must do so before December 21.

Remove all of your items from the vacated area of the room by Thursday, December 21. Even if you and your roommate(s) for fall agreed that some of your things could be in their area, you need to move them to your area of the room and re-negotiate that with your new roommate(s). The vacated area of the room should look like it did when you moved in at the beginning of fall semester.

NOTHING should be in the vacated area of the room – nothing in or on the closet/wardrobe, dresser, filing cabinet, desk, bed, chair, walls, and floor.

RIT Housing will enter the suite/room to inspect for damages, assess your preparation for a new roommate(s), and possibly perform maintenance. In addition, the vacated area will be cleaned.

If you fail to prepare your room for a roommate(s):

  • Your student account may be charged the cost of hiring an outside cleaning company.
  • You may be reassigned to another room.
  • You may be reported to student conduct and charged additional rent fees.

If a vacancy occurs in your apartment/suite at the end of fall semester, you will be given three days to complete a Roommate Request in order to fill the vacancy with a student of your choice. This process will need to be completed during the break between fall and spring semester. Please continue to check your RIT email during the break. View instructions to request a roommate.
