Dear Students:
In 2013, the State of New York enacted the Kerry Rose Fire Sprinkler Notification Act. The new legislation mandates that colleges give every student residing in the dorms, apartments and off-campus housing operated by the University written information about fire safety. In compliance with this new legislation, please read the following information pertaining to fire safety systems for all RIT owned or operated housing. Additionally, for your information, Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) is inspected annually, by the NYS Department of Homeland Security Fire Prevention Bureau to ensure compliance with building and fire codes.
Residence Halls
Each of the 1,757 rooms located in RIT residence halls is equipped with sprinklers and an automatic smoke detection system. Fire system signals report directly to the RIT Public Safety Department from the fire panels. The Public Safety Dispatchers immediately notify the Henrietta Fire District via a direct phone line located in Grace Watson Hall. The dispatch center is staffed 24/7, 365 days per year.
Colony Manor Apartment Complex
Each building is equipped with automatic smoke and fire detection systems. Fire systems report directly to the RIT Public Safety Department. RIT Public Safety immediately notifies the Henrietta Fire District via a direct phone line.
Perkins Green Apartment Complex
All buildings are equipped with automatic sprinklers and automatic smoke/fire detection and alarm systems. Fire systems report directly to the RIT Public Safety Department. RIT Public Safety dispatchers immediately notify the Henrietta Fire District via a direct phone line.
Riverknoll Apartment Complex
Three buildings in the Riverknoll complex (67-111, 332-376, 452-496) are equipped with automatic smoke/fire detection and alarm systems. Fire systems report directly to the RIT Public Safety Department. RIT Public Safety dispatchers immediately notify the Henrietta Fire District via a direct phone line.
All other buildings in the Riverknoll complex are equipped with local smoke detectors. These detectors sound only within the apartment or townhouse in which they are located and require the resident to notify RIT Public Safety, at 475-3333 in the event they are activated.
Greek Houses (6 free-standing fraternity/sorority houses)
All buildings are equipped with sprinkler systems and automatic smoke and fire detection systems. These systems report directly to RIT Public Safety. RIT Public Safety dispatchers immediately notify the Henrietta Fire District of an alarm via a direct phone line.
Racquet Club (2 apartment buildings)
Both buildings are equipped with automatic smoke and fire detection systems. Fire systems report directly to RIT Public Safety. RIT Public Safety immediately notifies the Henrietta Fire District via a direct phone line.
RIT Inn and Conference Center (hotel/residential rooms)
The building is equipped with sprinklers and an automatic smoke and fire detection system. The system reports simultaneously to the Henrietta Fire District and the RIT Public Safety Department.
Global Village Apartment Complex
All Global Village residences are equipped with automatic sprinklers and automatic smoke/fire detection systems. Fire systems report directly to RIT Public Safety. RIT Public Safety dispatchers immediately notify the Henrietta Fire District of an alarm via a direct phone line.
University Commons Apartment Complex
All buildings are equipped with automatic smoke/fire detection and alarm systems. Fire systems report directly to RIT Public Safety. RIT Public Safety dispatchers immediately notify the Henrietta Fire District via a direct phone line.
