RIT Committee for Sustainable Practices

Mission:
Committee for Sustainable Practices (CSP) contributes to the development and propagation of policies, practices and ideas in an effort to protect the natural environment and foster the sustainable use of our material, energy and natural resources.

Charge:

  • To advise the University's administration on University sustainability matters.
  • To bring together members who share interest, knowledge, expertise or strategic positions that impact our sustainable policies, practices, and physical development.
  • To be a conduit for information and represent faculty, staff, and students from across the University who are involved in activities related to sustainability.
  • To emphasize communication to the University and the Community at large on universal practicies which have been identified, evaluated, and endorsed by the Committee and the President's Office.

Motivation:
Members are particularly dedicated to the advancement of the Sustainable Focus Points for the University to:

  • Become a sustainable leader in higher education and the local community.
  • Become a leader in the development and promotion of sustainable education and technology.
  • Limit energy consumption, carbon emissions and material waste, as well as the ecological impact on the campus grounds and local infrastructure.
  • Moderate the expenditure of financial, material and energy resources to sustain current and future operations and growth, while maintaining the strength of the University.
  • Best serve the faculty, staff and students.
  • Elevate the University's image, ratings and sustainable efficacy.

Approach:

  • Senior VP of Finance and Administration coordinates assignments to this Committee based on recommendations from governance groups and key individuals connected to sustainability efforts on campus.
  • The Committee meetings are scheduled by the office of the Senior Vice President, Finance and Administration.
  • Members are asked to participate in meetings, reviews, preparation of reports and evaluation of proposals, concerns and new ideas.
  • All Committee members are treated equally.
  • Committee works with a principle of consensus and transparency.
  • Committee updates community on Institute's Sustainable Practices through RITGreen website, Institutional reporting and press releases.
