Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) is set on 1,300 acres of land which is outfitted with an infrastructure of roads, walkways and parking facilities, and integrated with over 200 buildings. RIT’s daily functionalities, its commuters, and its pedestrians have significant impact on local traffic patterns and the environment.
What is RIT Doing?
The Institute is committed to improve the vehicular and pedestrian movements on campus. The recently completed Comprehensive Parking and Transportation Strategy focuses on the analysis of opportunities and improvements in the existing transportation patterns, bus and shuttle transit services, parking allocations, and advancements in bike and pedestrian traffic. These new initiatives are part of a coordinated effort to introduce sustainable Travel Demand Management (TDM) techniques to our community.
Current Initiatives
CarpoolingRIT Parking and Transportation Services (PATS) developed a new carpooling platform accessible via myCourses called RIT RideShare. This platform provides a meeting place for employees and students who are interested in either offering or looking for a ride to school or work at the Institute.
What you can do:
- Email Gil Ong at gxocps@rit.edu to be added to the RideShare forum.
- Log on to the site and search for rides or post offers for rides in your vehicle.
- Share your experience with others and spread the word.
Throughout the school year, PATS provides shuttle services with regularly scheduled stops at all RIT apartment complexes, NTID, Barnes & Noble, Park Point and academic areas. The ‘on campus’ routes are operated by the Regional Transit Service (RTS) and the ‘off campus’ routes and late night shuttle are operated by Golden Memories Transportation (GMT). To promote usage, these shuttles are free for RIT students, faculty & staff with a valid RIT ID. Additional information can be found at: http://finweb.rit.edu/grms/pats/transportation/bus.html.
What you can do:
Use the shuttle service to get to class during the week and for small shopping trips to the mall on the weekends.
BicyclingBicycles are gaining popularity at RIT and on college campuses throughout the country. They offer a good alternative to get to and around campus, and to avoid traffic congestion. RIT has increased the number of bicycle racks throughout campus to encourage the use of this form of transportation and to assist in their safekeeping. Bicycle commuting is recognized as a key component of RIT’s transportation.
What you can do:
- Ride your bike to class or work.
- Consider using the newly installed pathway between C-Lot and U-Lot on the south side of campus to avoid congestion in high pedestrian-traffic areas.
- Familiarize yourself with safe biking practices and observe traffic regulations.
- Be considerate of joggers, pedestrians and vehicles sharing the same road.
- Keep your bike in safe operating condition through regular service and maintenance.
- Park and lock your bike in designated areas.
RIT has increased the number of motorcycle parking spaces throughout campus. These additional spaces are for seasonal use only (Spring, Summer, and Fall quarters), and are located in lots D, K, S, T, and U. The new areas are located in the front row and are identified by temporary signs. A Reserved Parking Permit is not required in any of the specifically designated motorcycle areas.
What you can do:
- Ride your motorcycle when road conditions are favorable.
- Make good use of your “preferred parking” spaces.
