With both a rigid, repetitive, compartmentalized structure and a glaciated form, the project symbolically explores the meeting point between the manufactured and natural worlds. Intended to be a living and learning climate sciences laboratory, the Glacier provides large public spaces for community exploration, as well as private areas for research. Cavernous ceiling heights, shifting floor plans and a towering oculus all convey the glaciated form, but it is the light travelling from the apex of the building down to its core that illustrates an authentic experience: the depth and gravity of the glacial crevasse. The Glacier will act as a hub for interdisciplinary opportunities. The project is envisioned as a multi-modal climate change and sustainability resource center, housing collaborative climate change research and a small hands-on learning museum for the public to learn about the concept of climate change.
