The Center of Excellence in Advanced & Sustainable Manufacturing is just one of five research centers at the Golisano Institute for Sustainability on the campus of the Rochester Institute of Technology. All of our centers partner with industry, and local, state, and federal governments, in applied research and technology transfer. Here a brief descriptions of the other research centers at GIS.
Center for Remanufacturing
The Center for Remanufacturing and Resource Recovery is internationally recognized as the leading center for research and development in the remanufacturing field. The Center was established in 1991 as a partnership between industry, academia and the government to support industry advancement.
Center for Sustainable Mobility
The Center for Sustainable Mobility develops viable technologies for sustainable transportation and supports smart and resilient transportation systems. Started in 2006 with a $4M grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation, this center's goal is to become a regional center for sustainable transportation and systems modernization.
NanoPower Research Labs
The NanoPower Research Labs are dedicated to the development of new materials and devices for power generation and storage for microelectronic components and micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS). NPRL's focus is to develop the materials and devices that are compatible with the current needs of a wide variety of microsystem technologies by exploiting the potential opportunities afforded through nanostructured materials and nanotechnology.
New York State Pollution Prevention Institute
The New York State Pollution Prevention Institute is funded by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation to provide state-wide environmental research, technology development and diffusion, outreach, and education. NYSP2I works to increase understanding of pollution prevention techniques while also disseminating technologies to enhance these efforts.
The Golisano Institute for Sustainability offers three academic degrees, all of which focus on sustainability.
Ph.D in Sustainability
The world's first Ph.D degree to focus on sustainable production systems is a broadly defined multi-disciplinary program designed for students who are driven to become sustainability change agents.
M.S. in Sustainable Systems
Like the Ph.D. program, the M.S. program focuses on systems that create goods and services using processes that are: non-polluting; conserving of energy and natural resources; economically viable; and safe and healthful for workers, communities, and consumers.
Master of Architecture
This program, a partnership between the the Golisano Institute for Sustainability and the College of Imaging Arts and Sciences, focuses on sustainable architecture. Graduates of this program will apply their knowledge and talents to the architectural challenges of 21st century design thinking centered around four key elements: urbanism, integration, technology, and sustainability.
