The Golisano Institute for Sustainability is a 170,000 sq. ft. facility located in the Louise M. Slaughter Hall, Center for Integrated Manufacturing Studies (building 78) on the Rochester Institute of Technology campus. Large manufacturing bays and adjacent office areas house the 5 GIS research centers and institutes:

  • Center for Remanufacturing and Resource Recovery (C3R) - Internationally recognized as a leading center for applied research in remanufacturing.
  • Center for Excellence in Sustainable Manufacturing (CESM) - Committed to enhancing the environmental and economic performance of products and processes.
  • Center for Sustainable Mobility (CSM) - Evaluates the environmental and economic impact of alternative fuel and propulsion technologies and develops technologies for optimal life-cycle design, management, and modernization of large equipment systems.
  • New York State Pollution Prevention Institute (NYSP2I) - Designed to enhance understanding of pollution prevention techniques while also disseminating technologies to enhance these efforts.
  • NanoPower Research Labs (NPRL) - Dedicated to the creation and utilization of nano devices and materials for power generation and storage.

Also co-located in the Louise M. Slaughter Hall are more than 20 specialized GIS labs featuring state-of-the-art testing equipment.

In addition, GIS facilities include a spacious 10-room, 400-seat training and conference center with smart capabilities. This area is available for employee training, industry outreach, professional conferences and meetings, regional and local community forums, and other educational activities.

Sustainability Hall

In spring 2011, GIS broke ground for Sustainability Hall, its new headquarters building adjacent to the Louise Slaughter Center. This new facility will be a 75,000 sq. ft. LEED certified research building (targeting LEED Platinum certification). Sustainability Hall is designed to demonstrate sustainable building technologies and energy systems by incorporating a:

  • Unique transparent infrastructure
  • Smart microgrid
  • Smart computing data center

Sustainability Hall will also serve as a laboratory for scientific discovery and experiential learning consisting of 7 systems integration test beds and 8 sustainability technology support labs with computing and collaborative spaces to support research in:

  • Sustainable products and production systems
  • Sustainable energy
  • Sustainable mobility, which will encompass research on future transportation systems based on fuel cells, biofuels and electric vehicles
  • Build system sustainability, which includes Net Zero energy buildings, sustainable building materials, sustainable architecture, and smart buildings

Sustainability Hall opened in early 2013, with formal dedication scheduled for mid-April 2013. Click here for more information on Sustainability Hall.
