Where do they get their Energy?
July 19 to July 23
Camp Description
Every living thing needs energy. We will spend the week exploring how the earth's incredible organisms get the energy they need to live. The special relationship humans have with energy and our earth will also be investigated as we use models, experiments and lab visits to wrap our heads around the transformations and transfers that keep our hearts beating and our cars moving.
Sample Investigations
- Is a leaf the perfect solar panel?
Through observation and experimentation campers will investigate how different plants capture and store solar energy. The results of our research will be compared to human attempts at harvesting the sun's energy. - How far can we run on a peanut butter and jelly sandwich?
Food is our fuel and through scientific inquiry we will look at the chemical reactions that allow us to turn what we eat into the energy we need to move and live. - Where does the energy go?
The flow of energy in an ecosystem will be explored as campers use models and simulations to understand energy pyramids and food webs. Imagination and creativity will help us turn challenging concepts into fun and exciting explorations.
Other Notes
Campers are expected to bring a lunch.
Snacks will be provided during the day.
Students should come dressed appropriately for travel around campus.
