Fun with Fossils!
August 8 - 12
Camp Description
Fossils tell the history of a place, and this region has fossils that date back more than 500 million years. In this camp we learn about paleontology - the study of prehistoric life. We will go on a real fossil dig to excavate and examine fossil remains. We will then compare the fossils we find with living animals to see some of the differences and similarities between extinct and living organisms. We will even learn how to make a fossil. All campers will leave at the end of the week with the fossils they excavate and the ones they make themselves!
Sample Investigations
- Can I make a fossil?
Campers will learn how to make fossils so that they can visualize how real fossils formed over millions of years. They will have fun as they create new organisms and personalize their fossils. - What is it like being on an actual fossil dig?
Campers will travel to an off-campus site to dig for their own fossils using the tools of modern paleontologists, and they will identify and get to keep any fossils they find. - What can I learn about evolutionary relationships from blood samples?
In this lab activity campers will study blood samples from 5 different animals and determine relationships based on the similarities and differences they discover.
Other Notes
Campers are expected to bring a lunch.
Snacks will be provided during the day.
