Bioscience Camps for High School Students

Program Description

Our three established Medical Science camps are designed for high school students (grades 9-11) who are interested in a clinical or research career in medicine, and who would really enjoy a comprehensive exploration of the human body and the conditions responsible for health and disease. These camps will include opportunities to meet clinicians and scientists and discuss careers in the medical and allied health professions. We are pleased to be offering a NEW high school camp for the first time in 2012 that uses modern molecular and bioinformatics techniques to explore the role of evolution in explaining the complex structure and function of the human body. Is there a fish in your family tree?

Medical Science I - Antibiotic Discovery and Enzymes

July 9 - 13

In the battle for survival the microbes seem to be winning. Infections that once took thousands of human lives are returning because they are becoming resistant to even our best antibiotics. In order to discover new antibiotics to fight these infections, researchers must first discover key target enzymes present in bacteria that are not associated with humans. Students will perform sophisticated laboratory experiments relating to the detection, isolation and measurement of enzyme activity from harmless bacteria. The goal will be to look for enzymes that might lead to the next generation of antibiotic drugs. Read More to Register

Medical Science II - Epidemics and Infectious Diseases

July 16 - 20

This camp will give students interested in biomedical research an exciting opportunity to explore the diverse world of microbes. Students will participate in the collection and isolation of microorganisms, and learn laboratory techniques required for growing, visualizing and indentifying bacterial organisms as a basis for gaining valuable insight into the world of epidemiology. They will learn about infections, epidemics and how science is attempting to stay one step ahead of microbes in an arms race that threatens our very existence. Read More to Register

Medical Science III - Medicine and Human Disease

July 23 - 27

The focus of this camp will be on systemic diseases, including cardiovascular disease, pulmonary disease, metabolic disease and cancer. Students will conduct tests for measuring normal organ function and they will learn how to perform several routine diagnostic and medical laboratory procedures. They will also examine preserved human organs, both macroscopically and microscopically, and will learn how to distinguish healthy and diseased tissues. Read More to Register

From Finches to Fish: The Making of the Fittest

August 6 - 10

Is there a zoo in you? Do you have an inner fish? Does molecular data support the evolution of the exquisitely complex human body by the process of natural selection? Students will combine the results they obtain from using modern molecular laboratory techniques and bioinformatics tools with traditional fossil and geologic evidence to explore the branches of the human family tree.
