Medicine and Human Disease

Camp Description
High school students (grades 9-11) who might be thinking about a career in a medical or allied heath field will really enjoy this comprehensive exploration of the human body and many of our most common systemic diseases. They will experience a real human anatomy lab where they will dissect and examine human organs that are both normal and diseased. Students will also become CPR certified, and learn how to conduct many of the basic diagnostic and medical lab techniques. They will meet practitioners and discuss careers in medicine, dentistry, physical therapy, occupational therapy, pharmacy, physician assistant, ultrasound and others.
Sample Investigations
- What is disease and how does it progress?
Through physiological experiments and direct observations of various pathological specimens ranging from heart disease to lung cancer, students will begin to understand the causes of human illness and how medical science attempts to diagnose and treat disease. - What is the recipe for a good health and a long life?
Students will use sophisticated equipment to measure their cardiovascular, respiratory and musculoskeletal fitness, and learn how proper nutrition and exercise lead to human health and longevity. - How do you prepare for a career in medicine?
Students will learn a variety of health-related careers and the various education and training requirements. They will learn first-hand about a 'day in the life' of health care practitioners through conversations and observations.
Other Notes
Students are expected to bring a lunch.
Snacks will be provided during the day.
