Awakening potential

teacher directing students

CBET offerings in K-12 Education are designed to introduce students to the myriad possibilities of careers in the fields of medicine and bioscience. Programs feature expert instruction, hands-on learning and access to the latest technologies. Some examples:

Summer M.A.S.H. Camp:

You’re a doctor facing a patient’s medical emergency. What do you do? The Medical Academy of Science and Health summer day camp program gives teenagers hands-on experience at medical diagnostics, from physical exams to lab tests. Offered in partnership with the Western New York Area Health Education Center and other area universities and hospitals, M.A.S.H. camp gives students a close-up look at the realities of a career in medicine.

Campus Visits:

Several times a year, high school students are invited to visit the RIT campus to explore career options. One-hour sessions in such areas as medical diagnostics and bioinformatics give hands-on experience and a real-world peek at what it would be like to study these subjects at the college level. Our annual Biomedical Sciences Career Day event is offered during spring quarter. This event is organized through the high school administrative offices. Detailed information about this program is available at www.rit.edu/cos/biology/SBMScareerDay.php

Each summer, high school juniors have the opportunity to a attend RIT’s College and careers Program to explore career options through interactive academic sessions. This two day career conference is designed to help students entering their senior year in the fall gain the experience and knowledge necessary to begin making career decisions about their future. The College & Careers program is a great way to experience life as an RIT college student. Students get to sleep in the residence halls, eat in the student cafeteria and participate in Friday night social activities with other college-bound seniors. More information is available at /www.rit.edu/emcs/admissions/careers/index.php.

Classroom Visits:

CBET instructors are available to visit K-12 classrooms to complement the school curriculum with guest lectures and demonstrations. (See K-12: Educators.) In addition, educators may arrange field trips for students to learn from RIT faculty and use the university’s technological resources.

Bioscience Camp Experience:

Each summer, July through August, CBET welcomes middle and high school students from the region and beyond to its bioscience camps. Experienced science educators use RIT’s expansive natural environment and high-tech laboratories to provide a unique learning experience for campers. Middle school students explore the natural world through field trips, laboratory experiments and computer simulations. High school students are given the exciting opportunity to investigate areas in medical science that cover human health, disease and medical care, and meet with practitioners in these fields.
