Customized, cost-effective workforce training

Does your organization rely on a workforce trained in the latest medical technologies? Are you frustrated by the cost and inefficiency of sending employees out of town for training? Are you looking for expert instructors who are leaders in their fields?

CBET is the only organization in the Rochester region to offer training customized to individual organizational requirements. Developed and delivered by RIT faculty and outside experts, CBET trainings feature:

Bioprocessing Operations

In the summer of 2009, CBET delivered customized training to a local company, Ortho-Clinical Diagnostics, Inc. (OCD), in common techniques and technologies used in modern bioprocessing operations. Two 5-day technical training programs were presented in the following areas:

The Fundamental Tissue Culture session introduced participants to common procedures used to culture and manipulate cells in the laboratory, through lectures and hands-on exercises.  Some of the topics covered were:

- aseptic technique and the laminar flow hood
- preparation of ‘defined’ growth media
- ficoll gradient isolation of cells
- cell cloning by end point titration
- freezing and recovering viable cells
- assaying for mycoplasma contamination by the polymerase chain reaction (PCR)
-  primary cultures: overcoming the challenges

Using lectures and laboratory exercises, participants in the Fundamental Molecular Biology workshop progressed from routine bacterial growth and the preparation of growth medium, to DNA manipulation and computerized data analysis. Topics covered included:

- preparation of Luna-Bertani (LB) growth medium
- culture of E. coli
- plasmid isolation
- restriction endonuclease digestion of plasmid DNA
- gel electrophoresis of plasmid digestion products
- transformation of E. coli with a recombinant plasmid
- introduction to DNA sequencing

Workplace Lectures

Over a six months period, CBET delivered a series of 2-hour customized lectures to employees of OCD at their Rochester facility.  The series was titled ‘Biology for Engineers’.  Lecture topics were determined by participants and included current advances in diagnosis and treatment of disease, fundamentals of cell and molecular biology, and fundamentals of cardiovascular disease and cancer. Feedback received through emails and direct communication established the lecture series as a resounding success. OCD engineers are better able to understand the biological principles behind the development of analytical devices for measuring biomarkers of diseases, and more importantly, have a better biological vocabulary to communicate with scientists at OCD.

Fitness Training Workshop

The Department of Exercise Science can bring customized fitness training directly to your business.  Using hands-on screening techniques, fitness assessment, case study practicum and quizzes, our experienced instructors will prepare you fully to be the best trainer in the business.  Our instructors also teach for the Cooper Institute Education Department, and they will share both the wisdom of their years of experience and their cutting edge perspectives on the newest developments in the fitness industry.

How it works

CBET faculty will create non-credit courses, workshops or seminars customized to the specific needs of attendees. These are not “one size fits all” courses designed without your input or that force you to guess whether the content will be valuable to you. Because each course is unique to your needs, the cost will depend on the length of the program and the number of enrollees.
