Diagnostic medical Sonography

Certificate Option

Ultrasound Certificate Option

At RIT you can also earn a Certificate in Diagnostic Medical Sonography. This option is designed for individuals who hold a:

  • Bachelor’s degree in the life sciences and other closely related degrees that may be approved by the Program Director. Additional pre-requisite coursework may be required for any type and level of degree.
  • Current active license or registry in an area of Medical or Allied Health Sciences: Examples of Medical or Allied Health Sciences areas are respiratory therapy, nuclear medicine, physical therapy, radiography (x-rays), nursing and much more. Any of the some 200 areas in the Medical or Allied Health Sciences fields will be considered.

The Certificate Program is an eighteen-month program which includes a full-time year of clinical training and one year of prerequisite coursework prior to the clinical internship. The clinical internship prerequisite courses are taken at RIT after you are accepted to the program.

  • Introduction to Diagnostic Medical Imaging
  • Cross-Sectional Anatomy
  • Ultrasound Instrumentation I & II
  • Medical Pathophysiology
  • Ultrasound Scanning I, II & III
  • Patient Care

The following courses may also be required, depending on the applicants background:

  • Medical Terminology (or equivalent course/experience)
  • Anatomy & Physiology I & II with their labs (or equivalent course)
  • General Physics I & II with their labs (or equivalent course)
