Translating Hydrofoils for Energy Production
Exhibit Code: GLE-224
Zone: Engineering Park
Location: James E. Gleason Hall (GLE/009) - 2395
Time: All Day
Description:
We are studying the use of translating hydrofoils for extracting energy from rivers and tides. In order to aid our understanding of the limits of performance for these systems and how to intelligently scale-up these systems, an experimental tow-tank facility was built to test small-scale translating hydrofoil systems. We will demonstrate a new 16-foot-long tow tank. A tow-motor will drag our small-scale system through the water to simulate the river flow and the system will move in response to the forces applied to it.
