Description:
The goal of this project was to remotely map the cross-sectional area of a cylindrical metal billet against the length of the billet. This information is used to adjust the current on the Vacuum Arc Re-melter (VAR) process, where a constant current density provides a more uniform metal granularity which results in a stronger metal. This project utilizes ultrasound and laser technology for distance mapping.
