Biofeedback: Where Body is Mind
Zone: Field House
Location: Gordon Field House and Activities Center (GOR/024) -
Time: All Day
How do you manage stress? Some people work out, others go for a walk, and still others like to curl up with a good book. Stress management is critical as many technologies find new ways to interrupt every moment of our daily lives. Technology can also be used therapeutically, it can help users practice being calm. Biofeedback is a type of therapy that uses technology to measure your body's signals and instantly shows them on a computer screen. There are a lot of different signals that biofeedback could use. Our setup measures the autonomic nervous system to find a person's stress level. The autonomic nervous system is the part of the body that controls the "fight or flight" response that kicks in when you see a tiger running at you (no, not RITchie) and during other stressful situations. Watch your heart rate, heart rate variability, respiration rate, skin conductance level, and skin temperature and learn how it relates to your level of stress and comfort. Use the computer screen like a mirror to learn how you can control your body's responses. Explore the mind-body connection and take better control over your stress!
