RIT Certificate Authority - IE (Macintosh)

What is a Certificate Authority?

A Certificate Authority is a service that issues the certificates needed to run a public key infrastructure. The CA could be an external commercial CA, or it could be a CA run by your company. The certificates enable a user to log on using a smart card, send encrypted e-mail, code-sign documents, and more. Since a CA is an important trust point in an organization, most organizations will have their own CA.

Installing the Certificate

  1. Open an Internet Explorer browser window
  2. On the menu bar, select File | Open…
  3. Type http://www.rit.edu/cgi-bin/loadcert in the text field box. Click Open.
  4. A dialog box will appear describing the Certificate Authority. Click the View Certificate Authority button.

  5. Validate the certificate by selecting both check boxes for "I have verified that the Certificate is not a forgery" and "I trust the Issuer to verify Internet Security". Click the Accept button.
  6. Next you will need to define a certificate password then click the OK button.
  7. This is a 1-time only thing, if it has already been done, or you have a certificate password assigned, skip to step 8.

  8. Confirm certificate password and click the OK button.
  9. Re-enter the password to add the certificate and click the OK button
