RIT Certificate Authority - IE (Windows)

What is a Certificate Authority?

A Certificate Authority is a service that issues the certificates needed to run a public
key infrastructure. The CA could be an external commercial CA, or it could be a CA run by
your company. The certificates enable a user to log on using a smart card, send encrypted
e-mail, code-sign documents, and more. Since a CA is an important trust point in an
organization, most organizations will have their own CA.

Installing the Certificate

  1. Open an Internet Explorer browser window
  2. On the menu bar, select File | Open…
  3. Type http://www.rit.edu/cgi-bin/loadcert.cgi in the text field box. Click Open.
  4. Press Save when the "File Download" window appears.
  5. Press on the Desktop button on the side and then press Save.
  6. Locate the "loadcert.cer" file on your desktop and double click on it.
  7. Click Install Certificate....
  8. The "Certificate Import Wizard" will appear. Click Next.
  9. Select Place all certificates in the following store radio button, then click Browse.
  10. Select "Trusted Root Certification Authorities" and click OK
  11. The previous window will appear and the "Certificate store:" field will be filled in with the above selection. Click Next.
  12. When the "Certificate Import Wizard" appears indicating that you have successfully completed the import, click Finish.
  13. A "Root Certificate Store" dialog window will appear. Click Yes.
  14. Another "Certificate Import Wizard" dialog window will appear. Click OK.
  15. When complete, click OK to close the "Certificate" dialog window.

Now whenever you go to a secure RIT site you will not be prompted that the certificate authority is unknown.
