Apple Macintosh systems and daylight-saving time changes in 2007
Mac OS X operating system
To be compatible with the upcoming daylight-saving time changes on the Macintosh platform, you must be running:
- Mac OS X Tiger version 10.4.5 or newer. For complete compatibility with U.S. and international time zone changes, we recommend version 10.4.8, plus the following two updates that were introduced on February 15, 2007:
- Mac OS X Panther version 10.3.9, plus the following two updates that were introduced on February 15, 2007:
These updates are available through Mac OS X's Software Update mechanism.
Earlier Macintosh operating systems
No earlier versions of Mac OS X or Mac OS classic have been officially updated by Apple to support the changes from the Energy Policy Act of 2005. Taking other factors into account, our ultimate recommendation is to upgrade capable Macintosh systems to Mac OS X Tiger.
However, as this may not be feasible, Apple does provide instructions on how to manually change daylight-saving time on earlier versions of Mac OS X and the discontinued Mac OS 9 (and earlier) operating systems in their About Daylight Saving Time changes in 2007 article.
RIT Exchange calendaring
Consult the RIT Microsoft Exchange and daylight-saving time changes in 2007 page for collected information related to the Exchange system.
The extended daylight-saving time period is:
- between March 11, 2007 and April 1, 2007
- between October 28, 2007 and November 4, 2007.
To minimize confusion during the extended DST period beginning in March, Microsoft also suggests following these additional steps when working with your RIT Exchange calendar:
- When a meeting is organized during the extended DST period, write the correct meeting time in the subject line or the body of the message. For example: “Project planning meeting—8:30 a.m.”
- Consider any calendar items in the extended DST period to be suspect. If you are not sure, verify the correct time with the organizer.
In addition, you may want to post an all-day event — repeating each day through the extended daylight-saving time period and marked with the free/busy status of "Free" — to your calendar to remind yourself of the extended daylight-saving time period.
For compatibility with these DST changes on your Exchange calendar on Mac OS X, you must additionally upgrade Microsoft Entourage 2004 to version 11.3.3 or newer. Entourage 2004 is part of Microsoft Office 2004.
There are no DST updates available for Microsoft Entourage v.X or earlier, and Microsoft has informed us that older versions of Entourage will not be updated.
Even with the latest version of Microsoft Entourage 2004, you may notice that Exchange calendar events during the period between March 11, 2007, and April 1, 2007 are displayed with an incorrect time. ITS will be announcing additional details about this shortly.
We are also not aware of any DST updates or required changes for Microsoft Outlook 2001, running in classic Mac OS or the Classic compatibility environment of Mac OS X. We recommend the use of Microsoft Entourage 2004 version 11.3.3 or later, plus a version of Mac OS X that has been updated for the DST changes.
Summary
To summarize:
If you have a computer that is running Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger or 10.3 Panther:
- Update Mac OS X Tiger to version 10.4.8 or newer, or version 10.3.9. Then, install Daylight Saving Time Update for Mac OS X and the Java for Mac OS X, Release/Update 5 through Mac OS X's Software Update feature.
- Update to Microsoft Entourage 2004 version 11.3.3 or newer for Exchange calendar compatibility with the DST changes. Version 11.3.4 is the current version as of this writing. You may update Microsoft Office 2004 with the Microsoft AutoUpdate application.
If you have a computer that is not running at least Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger or 10.3 Panther:
- Update Macintosh computers to Mac OS X Tiger or Panther if they are running older versions of Mac OS X or classic Mac OS (such as Mac OS 8 or 9). This will allow you to get an appropriate Daylight Saving Time Update for Mac OS X. If you cannot update to Tiger or Panther, you must follow Apple's instructions to manually change your daylight-saving time setting from now on (see Apple's About Daylight Saving Time changes in 2007 article).
- Switch to Microsoft Entourage 2004 version 11.3.3 or Outlook Web Access (OWA) to access your RIT Exchange calendar.
