Palm devices and daylight-saving time changes in 2007
Palm handheld device firmware and Palm OS operating system
To be compatible with the upcoming daylight-saving time changes on the Palm OS handheld device platform, you should make sure your Palm device is up-to-date with all of the relevant firmware upgrades and apply Palm’s DST Update.
Note: If you have Windows Mobile-based Palm Treo, you should consult our Windows Mobile page.
You should update to the:
- latest firmware for your device, available from the Palm Support Downloads site (be sure to follow the vendor’s instructions carefully during upgrades for the safety of your data)
- DST Update available from the Palm Daylight Saving Time Updates page.
The following Palm handheld devices have a DST Update available, according to the vendor:
- Treo 700p
- Treo 680, 650, 600
- Treo 300, 270
- LifeDrive
- Tungsten T5,T3, T2
- Tungsten C, E2, E, W
- Zire 72, 31, 21
- TX, Z22

If you do not have one of the devices listed on the Palm Daylight Saving Time Updates page, yours may require manual workarounds or other measures. We do not currently have further information on this.
Palm HotSync and data synchronization
Many Palm OS devices synchronize data with other data sources, including desktop applications through conduits, and sometimes even directly with RIT’s Exchange environment using the Exchange ActiveSync features on some handhelds.
Data synchronization often has a dependency on the date/time of objects — their creation and modification times … and for events, the time for which they are defined. Therefore, you should also ensure that:
- your desktop computer is up-to-date, so that it has the latest time zone rules for daylight-saving time
- the desktop applications software to which you synchronize is updated completely, especially if they are calendar or time-related
- your data synchronization software, such as Palm HotSync, is up-to-date
- all of your HotSync conduits are similarly updated, especially if they are calendar or time-related
- you follow the recommendations for RIT’s Exchange calendaring system, if you synchronize your device to your Exchange calendar.
RIT Exchange calendaring
Consult the RIT Microsoft Exchange and daylight-saving time changes in 2007 page for collected information related to the Exchange system.
The extended daylight-saving time period is:
- between March 11, 2007 and April 1, 2007
- between October 28, 2007 and November 4, 2007.
To minimize confusion during the extended DST period beginning in March, Microsoft also suggests following these additional steps when working with your RIT Exchange calendar:
- When a meeting is organized during the extended DST period, write the correct meeting time in the subject line or the body of the message. For example: “Project planning meeting—8:30 a.m.”
- Consider any calendar items in the extended DST period to be suspect. If you are not sure, verify the correct time with the organizer.
In addition, you may want to post an all-day event — repeating each day through the extended daylight-saving time period and marked with the free/busy status of "Free" — to your calendar to remind yourself of the extended daylight-saving time period.
Summary
To summarize:
- Consult our Windows Mobile page if you have a Windows Mobile-based Treo.
- Update your host Apple Macintosh or Microsoft Windows computer with the latest updates, to make sure that it has the most current time zone rules.
- Upgrade your Palm handheld with the latest OS and/or firmware updates for that model, available at the Palm Support Downloads site.
- Update your Palm HotSync and Desktop applications, and/or other equivalent applications like Mark/Space’s Missing Sync. (Consult each vendor for specific DST compatibility.)
- Update and/or other desktop applications to which you synchronize your Palm. For example, Mac OS X users should update Microsoft Entourage 2004 to version 11.3.3 or later. (Consult each vendor for specific DST compatibility.)
- Update any desktop conduits used in the synchronization process, such as Chapura PocketMirror. (Consult each vendor for specific DST compatibility.)
- Consult our RIT Exchange page before proceeding if you synchronize your Palm OS device to your Exchange account, either through a desktop conduit or directly with Exchange ActiveSync.
- Compare your Palm handheld to the list of those with an available DST Update on the Palm Daylight Saving Time Updates page. If the DST Update applies to your model, install it.
