Quick summary of daylight-saving time changes in 2007
Microsoft Windows
To be compatible with the upcoming daylight-saving time changes on the Windows platform, you must be running Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 or later. No earlier versions of Windows have been officially updated by Microsoft to support the changes from the Energy Policy Act of 2005.
You may notice that Exchange calendar events from the period between March 11, 2007, and April 1, 2007, are displayed with an incorrect time when viewed in Microsoft Outlook. This will not be fixed by updating Windows, but updating Windows is an important prerequisite and ITS will be announcing additional details about this shortly.
To summarize:
- Please install all critical Microsoft updates* by visiting the Windows Update site (see below). You may confirm that this particular update is installed by looking for it in the "Add/Remove" Area of the Windows Control Panel. Check the box at the top called "Show Updates" and scan through the list for an update with the following title: "Update for Windows XP (KB933360)." Updated
- Please contact ITS or your systems administrator about an upgrade to Windows XP if your operating system is Windows 2000 or older (or if you are unsure what version of Windows you currently have installed).
-
Ensure that the "Automatically adjust clock for daylight saving changes" check box is checked.
* = Please visit this site and review the section related to IE7. If you use or need access to any RIT web-based applications that are incompatible with IE7, then please omit that critical update.

Apple Macintosh
To summarize:
If you have a computer that is running Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger or 10.3 Panther:
- Update Mac OS X Tiger to version 10.4.8 or newer, or version 10.3.9. Then, install Daylight Saving Time Update for Mac OS X and the Java for Mac OS X, Release/Update 5 through Mac OS X's Software Update feature.
- Update to Microsoft Entourage 2004 version 11.3.3 or newer for Exchange calendar compatibility with the DST changes. Version 11.3.4 is the current version as of this writing. You may update Microsoft Office 2004 with the Microsoft AutoUpdate application.
If you have a computer that is not running at least Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger or 10.3 Panther:
- Update Macintosh computers to Mac OS X Tiger or Panther if they are running older versions of Mac OS X or classic Mac OS (such as Mac OS 8 or 9). This will allow you to get an appropriate Daylight Saving Time Update for Mac OS X. If you cannot update to Tiger or Panther, you must follow Apple's instructions to manually change your daylight-saving time setting from now on (see Apple's About Daylight Saving Time changes in 2007 article).
- Switch to Microsoft Entourage 2004 version 11.3.3 or Outlook Web Access (OWA) to access your RIT Exchange calendar.
RIT Microsoft Exchange calendaring
To summarize:
- The campus-wide RIT Exchange system has already been updated to support the new daylight-saving time transition — but this alone is not enough to ensure that the calendars in that system are correct during the extended daylight-saving time periods:
- between March 11, 2007 and April 1, 2007
- between October 28, 2007 and November 4, 2007.
- Computers, software, and devices used by individuals to access Exchange for calendaring must be updated — while this is a prerequisite, it also does not by itself ensure that calendar data is entirely correct (as listed on the main Daylight-saving time changes in 2007 page)
- ITS, in conjunction with other support providers around campus, has made the final decision to not run Microsoft’s Time Zone Update Tool on all RIT Exchange accounts
- Individuals should confirm that events in calendars for which they are responsible are scheduled at the expected times throughout the extended daylight-saving time period, and correct them manually if they are not
- Above all else, individuals should check with meeting organizers to confirm the times for any meeting invitations scheduled during the extended daylight-saving time period.
RIM BlackBerry devices
To summarize:
- Update your host Apple Macintosh or Microsoft Windows computer with the latest updates, to make sure that it has the most current time zone rules.
- Update and/or upgrade other desktop applications to which you synchronize your RIM BlackBerry. For example, Mac OS X users should update Microsoft Entourage 2004 to version 11.3.3 or later. (Consult each vendor for specific DST compatibility.)
- For RIT BES users, verify that the update is properly installed on your BlackBerry by going to OPTIONS, then 2007 DST PATCH. You should see "2007 DST Patch applied". If not, contact your systems administrator or the ITS Help Desk at 5-HELP (5-4357).
- For Stand-Alone BlackBerry users, please visit http://www.blackberry.com/select/dst2007/ to manually update your device.
Microsoft Windows Mobile, Windows CE, and PocketPC devices

- Upgrade your Windows Mobile handheld with the latest firmware for that model, if available from the hardware vendor, such as Dell.
- Update any data synchronization applications you may use in conjunction with your Windows Mobile device. (Consult each vendor for specific DST compatibility.)
- Update other desktop applications to which you synchronize your Palm. For example, Mac OS X users with Windows Mobile devices should update Microsoft Entourage 2004 to version 11.3.3 or later. (Consult each vendor for specific DST compatibility.)
- Consult our RIT Exchange page before proceeding if you synchronize your Windows Mobile device to your Exchange account, either through a desktop link or directly with Exchange ActiveSync.
