ITS (Phone) Switch Upgrade Project
Project Overview
After graduation, ITS will begin an upgrade to the RIT telecommunications switch equipment. It will involve a brief outages for select areas on campus and will mark the return of several facilities onto the main network infrastructure.
Within the project scope, a new fiber connection will be installed to the Racquet Club apartments. Along with this, telephone number changes will be undertaken at the apartments. In the past, dial tone was provided by a local provider for their local and long distance service. With the Switch Upgrade, all apartments, except those at Riverknoll, will be part of the main campus switch and numbers formally associated with apartments will be changed to allow for five-digit dialing between apartments and campus. (Information about these number changes has been addressed through the Housing Operations team prior to the cutover.)
The RIT Inn & Conference Center will also become part of the telecommunications network. The dial plan for the resident portion of the Inn (separate from guest rooms) will be provided prior to Move-In/Orientation, in the fall.
The switch upgrade improves service and positions RIT to take advantage of next generation communications technologies, as well as supports Strategic Plan goals for seamless communications across RIT.
