ITS (Phone) Switch Upgrade Project
Message Center Email on 5/12/08: Phone Switch Upgrade / Planned Outage
TO: All RIT Students, Faculty, and Staff
FROM: Chris Denninger, Director, Public Safety; and Dave Pecora, Associate Director, Information and Technology Services
SUBJECT: Phone Switch Upgrade / Planned Phone Outage
ITS will be performing an upgrade to the campus telephone switch on Tuesday evening May 27, 2008 starting at 9PM. This upgrade will affect dial tone service over the majority of the campus, meaning phone service will be limited to individual cell phones and campus pay phones. Dial-tone for the apartment complexes will remain functional during this outage to contact 9-1-1- for emergencies but Public Safety's main business and emergency numbers will not be functioning.
Telephone service will be disrupted during this upgrade for several hours. The phone outages will be focused around academic facilities, all residence halls, and all blue-light call boxes. The RIT Inn & Conference Center will not be affected.
During the upgrade, Public Safety and security personnel will be wearing brightly colored vests, and will be visible in the NRH quad, all main apartment bus shelters to provide assistance to residents.
In case of an emergency during the disruption:
- Contact 9-1-1 from a cell phone, or
- Contact Public Safety at AOL IM: RITPublicSafety, or
- Immediately contact the Safety Officer in the NRH quad, or
- Immediately contact the Safety Officer located at the main bus shelter in each RIT apartment complex.
For non-emergencies such as apartment lockouts and motorist assists, the Public Safety Department can be contacted at:
585-739-7561, or
585-734-4639, or
AOL IM: RITPublicSafety
ITS will inform the RIT community once the upgrade is completed. If there are any questions about this service interruption, please contact the ITS Service Desk at 475-4357 (TTY: 475-2810), or send an email to helpdesk@rit.edu.
