GIBSON Comes to Town

Individual Websites to Transition to NEW RIT Web Environment by Feb. 29

After a long and storied history at RIT, the venerable Grace web environment is being retired. A newer, more robust web environment, named Gibson, is taking its place. This means all materials stored on the old Grace site need to be migrated to Gibson; all new assignments to students building websites for RIT classes must now be built in the new environment.

The web continues to be an important informational resource for RIT departments and colleges as well as current students and prospective students. This past summer, a new RIT web environment was launched offering significant enhancements on the former web environment – from better security and navigation to increased reliability and maintenance.

With the new environment firmly in place, migrations from the former environment to the new are in progress, and will continue over the next several months. ITS University Web Services will be contacting colleges and divisions to initiate the migration of their sites to the new environment. Until these sites are migrated they will continue to be maintained on grace.rit.edu. All new accounts for colleges and divisions are now being created in the new environment.

In the former environment, personal websites are hosted at www.rit.edu/~<Your RIT Computer Account>, and accounts are accessible through grace.rit.edu.

In the new environment, personal websites were hosted at people.rit.edu/~<Your RIT Computer Account>, and accounts were accessible through gibson.rit.edu. Once you have fully completed the migration to the new environment, personal websites will then be hosted without the tilde at people.rit.edu/<Your RIT Computer Account>. During the initial migration period, accounts were created in both environments. As of October 2007, new accounts are only being created in the new environment.

Everyone that currently has a personal website in the former environment is responsible for migrating it to the new environment. As a reminder, migration of all personal websites must be completed by February 29, 2008. Individuals with personal sites should migrate their respective sites immediately. If you know of faculty, staff or students that may not have access to this communication, such as those on sabbatical, leave of absence, study abroad, etc., please forward them this information.
