Windows XP Wireless Advanced Setup

Advanced Setup

  1. Click Start → Control Panel (Start → Settings → Control Panel).
  2. Switch to "Classic View" by clicking "Switch to Classic View" in the upper left-hand corner (if necessary).
  3. Double click "Network Connections."
  4. Right click on your wireless card (typically called "Wireless Connection") and select "Properties."

  5. Click on the "Wireless Networks" tab. Ensure the option labeled "Use Windows to configure my wireless network setting" IS checked.

  6. Click the "Add" button in the "Wireless Networks" tab.
  7. On the "Wireless network properties" page (Association tab), enter the following information:
    • Type "RIT" (without the quotes) in the "Network name SSID:" text box.
    • Select "WPA2" for the "Network Authentication" field.
    • Select "AES" for the "Data encryption" field.
  8. Click on the "Authentication" tab

  9. On the "Authentication" tab, enter the following information:
    • Ensure the checkbox "Enable IEEE 802.1x authentication..." is checked.
    • Select "Protected EAP (PEAP)" for the "EAP type:" field.
    • Un-Check the "Authenticate as computer when computer information..." checkbox.
  10. Click the "Properties" button.

  11. On the "Protected EAP Properties page, enter the following information:
    • Check the "Enable Fast Reconnect" checkbox.
  12. Click the "Configure..." button.
  13. In the EAP MSCHAPv2 Properties window:
    • Un-Check the "Automatically use my Windows logon name and password (and domain if any)" option.
  14. Click "OK" on the "EAP MSCHAPv2 Properties" window.
  15. Click "OK" on the "Protected EAP Properties" window.
  16. Click "OK" on the "Wireless network properties" window.
  17. Look at the "Preferred networks:" area in the Wireless networks properties page, you should see an entry for the network that was just added, the entry should appear as "RIT (Automatic)."
  18. Remove any entries that refer to the network "RIT-Legacy" and "RIT-Guest"
  19. Click "OK" on the " Wireless Network Connection Properties" window.
  20. Click on the balloon pop-up in the lower right hand corner of your screen.
  21. You will be prompted with the "Enter Credentials" window.

  22. Enter the Following information in the "Enter Credentials" Window:
    • Enter your RIT account username in the "User name:" field.
    • Enter your RIT account password in the "Password:" field.
    • Do not enter anything in the "Logon domain:" field.
    • Click "OK" on the "Enter Credentials" window.
  23. Click on the balloon pop-up in the lower right hand corner of your screen.
  24. Click "OK" on the "Validate Server Certificate" window.

When your RIT Password expires, you may have to remove the wireless profile, re-add, and re-enter your RIT username and updated password.
