Cisco VPN client User Authentication dialog fails to appear

The Cisco VPN client may fail to display its User Authentication dialog box - which lets you enter your RIT computer account username and password - while trying to connect to the RIT Virtual Private Network (VPN).

Without the login dialog, you are not able to successfully complete the VPN connection process. You may briefly see a progress bar in the VPN application window, but the VPN software does not finish connecting. The VPN client may display its status (in the lower left hand corner of the application window) as "Not connected" or "(Backup)."

This problem appears to persist through logout/login, restarts, and multiple attempts to connect.

If you come across this problem, we recommend reinstalling the VPN client software on your computer. We have tried other remedies and troubleshooting, and to date have not found another one that works consistently. It is possible that a future VPN client update or change in the RIT environment will eliminate this problem. For now, reinstalling the VPN client software appears to fix it. If it does not, please contact us through the ITS HelpDesk.

We have noted this problem on Mac OS X Tiger computers running the Cisco VPN client version 4.6.

Note: This error should no longer appear with version 4.9 and later of the Cisco VPN client. Please obtain the latest version from the RIT Virtual Private Network pages.
