Microsoft Entourage 2004 version 11.2.1 update
The Microsoft Entourage 2004 version 11.2.1 update prevents rare but possible data loss to your RIT Exchange messaging account when you are running Microsoft Entourage 2004 Service Pack 2.
Note: ITS urges all customers using Microsoft Entourage 2004 on Mac OS X to apply the Microsoft Entourage 2004 version 11.2.1 update before February 21, 2006. After this date, regular system maintenance conducted by ITS-which had been suspended temporarily-may trigger the conditions for the rare but possible data loss, and we would obviously like to prevent that. Those conditions are described in Microsoft Knowledge Base article 915056.
If you have experienced data loss which you suspect is due to Entourage 11.2 (before you have updated to version 11.2.1), please contact us immediately. Restoration of Exchange data can take approximately one week.
Who needs the update
If you are not using Microsoft Office 2004 on Apple Mac OS X, this notice does not apply.
Anyone using Mac OS X and running Microsoft Office 2004 at RIT should apply the Office 2004 version 11.2.1 update. You should apply it whether you are using Microsoft Office for the Mac on campus or at home, on an RIT-owned or personal computer. System administrators should deploy this update to the systems they manage.
Because the Office 2004 version 11.2.1 update requires Office 2004 Service Pack 2, that service pack should also be applied if it has not already been installed. While Office 2004 Service Pack 2 introduces the potential for this problem (which is fixed by the 11.2.1 update), Microsoft Entourage 2004 Service Pack 2 update provides enhanced features for connecting with RIT's Exchange messaging system. The Microsoft Office 2004 Service Pack 2 update in September was quickly followed by the 11.2.1 update.
Find the version of Entourage
Simply running Entourage version 11.2 may initiate the rare but possible data loss problem. Therefore, we recommend finding out the version number without launching the program where possible.
If "Version 11.2.1" appears through any of the methods below (from the Dock, from the Finder, or from within Entourage itself while it is running), then you have this update. If you don't, you'll need to get the update or contact us.
From the Dock
If the Entourage icon appears in your Dock (see "Mac OS X Dock"), you can right-click or Control-click (see Right-clicking) on that icon and choose the "Show in Finder" command. Then, get the version number using the "From the Finder" instructions below.
From the Finder
- Highlight the Microsoft Entourage icon in the "Microsoft Office 2004" folder.
- Choose the "Get Info" command from the File menu in the menu bar at the top of your main display.
- Look for the "Version" field in the "Microsoft Entourage Info" window that appears.
Within Entourage
You can find out the current version of Entourage within the program by selecting "About Entourage" from the "Entourage" menu (found next to the Apple menu when Entourage is running).
The version number is in bold text near the top of the "About Entourage" window, and will look like:
"Version 11.2.1 (051004)"
Get the update
The Entourage 2004 v11.2.1 update requires Microsoft Office 2004 Service Pack 2 (SP2). If you have not updated to Office 2004 SP2 yet, you must install that first but you should immediately update Entourage to v11.2.1 afterwards. A combination installer with both updates may be available.
You may install both Office 2004 SP2 and the Entourage update by:
- Launch the Microsoft AutoUpdate program in the Mac OS X "Applications" folder.
- Click the "Check for Updates" button.
- If the program warns you that "There are no updates available for your Microsoft software at this time," then the Office suite up to date.
- If the program displays available updates, select and install them.
- Continue to "Check for Updates" until no more updates are available. When no more updates are available, the Office suite is up to date.
