Microsoft Entourage v.X and outgoing mail

RIT Exchange accounts set up in Microsoft Entourage v.X will work best with the "mymail.rit.edu" outgoing mail server, when you need to Set up an Exchange account in Mac OS X.

The "mymail.rit.edu" outgoing mail server provides Simple Mail Transport Protocol (SMTP) services. On "mymail.rit.edu," authentication and secure SSL connections are both required.

Note: There is also an "smtp-server.rit.edu" server, which is not the ideal server for outgoing mail from an Exchange account in Entourage v.X.

The requirement for "mymail.rit.edu" as the SMTP server is only for the Exchange account within Entourage. This is not a requirement for IMAP or POP accounts, even if the IMAP/POP accounts are connecting with an Exchange account. (We strongly recommend that you only use one Exchange account per identity in Microsoft Entourage; see Multiple Exchange accounts merge data in Microsoft Entourage.)

The benefits are:

  • Event invitations that you create and send to other Exchange users will be properly transformed so that they can be understood by Microsoft Entourage, Microsoft Outlook, and Outlook Web Access (OWA). If you use "smtp-server.rit.edu" as your outgoing mail server, Outlook and Outlook Web Access users cannot interpret event invitations from Entourage v.X.
  • You may send to addresses for both individuals and groups even if they are currently only listed in the Exchange mail system. The "smtp-server.rit.edu" outgoing mail server is not yet aware of all Exchange-only e-mail addresses. Therefore, messages you send to Exchange-only addresses through "smtp-server.rit.edu" will bounce back to you, because the recipient is unknown.
  • "Mymail.rit.edu" provides secure, SSL-encrypted connections when sending mail, as well as receiving. Your mail cannot easily be intercepted and read between Entourage and "mymail.rit.edu." As of this writing, "smtp-server.rit.edu" does not provide this level of security.

Note: Microsoft Entourage 2004 does not use SMTP for outgoing mail from Exchange accounts. Therefore, it does not suffer from this limitation of Entourage v.X. (See Microsoft Entourage Exchange servers and protocols.)
