Print to a LocalTalk-based PostScript laser printer
To print to a LocalTalk-based Adobe PostScript laser printer, you will need the following items:
- Apple Macintosh or compatible system with a free serial port (printer port only) or Power Macintosh with a free GeoPort serial port (either printer or modem port)
- Installed system software with LaserWriter 8 printer driver in the Chooser
- LocalTalk or PhoneNet wiring appropriate for the computer to printer connection
Once you have the computer and printer physically connected with the LocalTalk or PhoneNet cabling, you need to set the computer to use AppleTalk on the selected serial port. This will prevent you from using AppleTalk on the computer's Ethernet port, if any.
Turn the power on the printer off, wait a few moments, and then turn it back on. Let the printer warm up until panel lights stop blinking.
Then, use the Chooser or Desktop Printer Utility to find the printer on the selected serial port. (You should get a printer icon on your desktop; this is the desktop printer queue, and you can use it to manage some aspects of the printers operation.) Print a test page from any application.
Note: We have phased out support for all LocalTalk-based printers on July 1, 2002.
