Select fonts quickly and precisely in Microsoft Word

Sometimes, selecting just the right font in Microsoft Word's menus can be daunting or event frustrating -- especially if you have a lot of fonts installed on your system. (There are a number of Font formats compatible with Mac OS X and Five folders for fonts in Mac OS X, so this situation is bound to get more common.)

Formatting palette

The Formatting palette can be found in Microsoft Office v.X and 2004 on Mac OS X.

  1. Open the Formatting palette and expand the "Font" section.
  2. Click on the "Name" pop-up menu in the "Font" section of the Formatting palette. The pop-up menu, displaying typeface names, appears.
  3. Type the first few characters of a font's name. The menu automatically jumps to the first matching font.
  4. Use arrow keys to move up or down to highlight the desired font from the list, if necessary.
  5. Press the Return key to select the highlighted font.

Font menu

The Font menu is common to Microsoft Office 2001, v.X, and 2004. However, the process described below only works on the Mac OS X versions of Office.

  1. Click on the Font menu in the menu bar at the top of the screen.
  2. Use the arrow keys to move up and down through the Font menu -- rather than using the mouse pointer -- to pick a font. As you move through the Font menu, typeface names will be highlighted.
Note: If you press the left or right arrow keys on the keyboard, you will move to the menu to the left or right of the Font menu. Mac OS X allows you to navigate the menus with the keyboard.
  3. Press the Return key to select the highlighted font.
