Error Type 2 in Netscape Communicator 4.8
Users of Netscape 4.x may experience an Error Type 2 when entering Netscape Messenger. This is caused by corrupt mailbox caches (.snm files) in the user profile folder. These cache files can be deleted safely; they will be recreated next time Messenger is opened.
Note that these caches are created for local mailboxes only (for mail which is stored on your computer and nowhere else); IMAP boxes are not affected. POP mailboxes, because they are treated like local mail, can be affected.
To delete the .snm files, follow these steps:
- Quit Netscape Communicator.
- Open your hard drive.
- Open the folder "System Folder."
- Open the folder "Preferences."
- Open the folder "Netscape Users."
- Open your user profile folder. It is often named after your full name.
- Open the folder "Mail."
- Drag all files ending in ".snm" to the Trash. There should be one .snm file for each of your mailboxes.
- Close all open windows.
- Launch Netscape Communicator.
Each time you select a new mailbox, Netscape will recreate the .snm cache. This may take several minutes if the mailbox is large, or if you have a slower computer.
