Migrate Palm Desktop 4.0 to Entourage 2004

Entourage 2004 has Exchange and handheld syncronization capabilities. For convenience purposes. Users that have previously used Palm Desktop for their calendaring and syncronization needs should consider switching to Entourage for those same needs as Entourage does have the capability of synchronizing to RIT's Exchange server. Since calendaring is an important distinguishing factor between applications, we suggest you read about Exchange calendar access from a Macintosh, which may also help with your choice.

Preparing your palm and applications for migration.

Note: If you do not have Entourage 2004 installed on your machine, you should do that first. If you need to purchase . Office 2004 should be on sale in the RIT Campus Connections bookstore for faculty, staff, and student home use. You may also wish to check out the Microsoft Entourage Exchange servers and protocols that are used, to see how the program synchronizes data with your Exchange account.
  1. HotSync the handheld with Palm Desktop 4.0 to back up your data.
  2. Use Disk Utility to create a disk image backup of the following directories:
    1. Palm Desktop data: /users/username/Documents/Palm
    2. Entourage data: /users/username/Documents/Microsoft User Data
  3. In Palm Desktop: Export (file>export) all data from Palm Desktop that the user needs
  4. In Entourage: Import (file>import) all data that was exported from Palm Desktop into Entourage.
  5. Install the Handheld Sync Installer (Entourage Conduit) located in the Additional Tools folder located inside the Microsoft Office 2004 folder.
Note: This installer will disable the Palm Desktop Conduit and place it in the folder /Library/Application Support/disabled conduits.

Syncronizing your palm with entourage for the first time.

  1. Open the HotSync Manager from /Applications/Palm.
  2. Open the HotSync Conduit Settings (HotSync>Conduit Settings).
  3. Verify that the Entourage Conduit is present. Double-click Entourage Conduit to open Entourage Conduit Settings.
  4. Choose the "Entourage overwrites" for all categories that the user wishes to have synced. Choose "Do Nothing" for all categories that the user does not use or wish to have synced. Make sure that for all categories that you choose "Entourage overwrites" for, the "do once then sync" box is checked.
  5. Use the HotSync button to synchronize your Palm as usual. The Palm will now only synchronize with Entourage. All changes need to be made in it as Palm Desktop will no longer sync with the Palm.
  6. As long as the "do once then sync" boxes were checked, the default HotSync settings will change to "synchronization" for all future syncs.
Your Palm should be ready to go!
