Set up a Macintosh

For faculty and staff, we can set up nearly every model of Mac with an appropriate operating system and default suite of applications software -- often in just a few minutes! We can also register your computer on the RIT campus network, and assist you with transferring your files from an older computer to a new one.

While we still support Mac OS 9 setups, we encourage the campus community to upgrade to Mac OS X (see below).

Further setup steps, like assisting with file transfer from an old computer to a new one, add time to the setup process -- no matter which operating system you are using.

If you wish to schedule set up of a new (or "new to you") RIT-owned computer, please contact us through the ITS Service Desk. Unfortunately, we cannot assist with the setup of home or personal computers.

Mac OS classic

Our latest setup for classic Mac OS is a Mac OS 9 disk image that can be restored to a computer in minutes. Access to our standard disk images are also available for use by Macintosh system administrators in local departments across RIT; please contact us for details.

We no longer provide direct setup support for computers running any version of Mac OS 8; we recommend that you upgrade to at least Mac OS 9.

Mac OS X

Setup support for Mac OS X now available as of the 2003-2004 academic year. We can help you set up a Macintosh that shipped with Mac OS X pre-installed, or install Mac OS X for you.

We recommend that older computers be carefully evaluated for Mac OS X support; it can be helpful to replace an older computer with a new one, rather than upgrade it to support Mac OS X. This, of course, depends on the model and configuration of the computer you have. For more details, see our information on Mac OS X system requirements and "Mac OS X performance".

Newer computers introduced since Mac OS X's debut in March of 2001 are almost always better-suited for Mac OS X than older models.

Setup of Mac OS X systems is now very quick if you have a brand new, out-of-the-box computer or you already have Mac OS X pre-installed. Basic installation of our supported Software suite and set up of your working environment and Internet applications can take as little as 30 minutes, thanks to our "Macintosh Common Package" installer and Reignition setup application.

If you are a system administrator and want access to these tools for the faculty and staff you support, please contact us!
