Disk Copy application
The Disk Copy program is available in Mac OS X 10.1-10.2. It provides a way to create single container files, called disk images, that can be snapshots of other disks or folders. Disk images can be set to be read-only, which makes them effective for some simple kinds of backups -- the contents of a read-only disk image cannot be modified.
Disk Copy can also be used to create read/write disk image containers that can be used to store files that you drag onto them.
Disk Copy's functions have been rolled into the Disk Utility application as of Mac OS X 10.3.
You can also work with disk images from the command line using the "hdiutil" command.
