Font formats compatible with Mac OS X

Mac OS X directly supports many more font formats that "Mac OS classic" did.

According to the latest information in Apple Knowledgebase article 25251, those formats include:

  • Macintosh TrueType fonts
  • PostScript Type 1 fonts
  • Data fork suitcases (whose filenames end in ".dfont")
  • Mac OS classic font suitcases
  • OpenType fonts (".otf")
  • Microsoft Windows fonts and collections (".ttf" and ".ttc").

Fonts may be stored, with some restrictions, in any of the Five folders for fonts in Mac OS X.

Apple also has more information on Using and Managing Fonts in Mac OS X, including a downloadable whitepaper.

On top of that, the Apple Developer Connection Fonts and Font Tools pages discuss in more detail how to build font libraries that will work with Mac OS X.
