Print to an AppleTalk printer with Mac OS X

Mac OS X and Print Center support printing over AppleTalk. Use Print Center to set up a new AppleTalk printer.

Note: AppleTalk routing is no longer available on the RIT campus network as of July 24, 2006. This could affect connections to file servers, network printers, and inter-application communication. While RIT’s network does not disable or prevent the use of the AppleTalk protocol itself, the lack of AppleTalk routing does prevent that traffic from:

  • going across network segment boundaries (or subnets)
  • traversing the RIT backbone.

Because of this ITS will not be able to support or troubleshoot AppleTalk related problems. For more information, see our AppleTalk support statement page.

  1. Open Print Center from the "Utilities" folder inside your "Applications" folder. If you do not have any printers set up, a dialog will appear asking if you would like to add a printer.

Alternately, you may be presented with the printer list.

  2. Click the "Add..." button in the window to begin adding a new printer. (The button in the "No Printers" dialog and the button in the printer list perform the same action.) By default, you will see a dialog showing all available Rendezvous printers.

  3. Click the pop-up menu at the top of the dialog to choose a different connection method.

  4. Select "AppleTalk" from the list. Print Center will display all available AppleTalk printers. You must have the AppleTalk protocol turned on for your current network connection in the System Preferences application.

  5. Single-click on your printer in the list. You may need to scroll down the list box.
  6. Click the "Add" button. Print Center will communicate with your printer and should automatically select the correct drivers. You will be presented with the printer list, which should now contain your printer.

  7. Click on your printer in the list.
  8. Click the "Make Default" button to ensure that your printer is the default printer for your system. The name should turn bold.
