Turn off display of shared printers in Mac OS X

The Print Center application in Mac OS X 10.2 Jaguar automatically displays shared printers on a network. It does this by taking advantage of Apple's Rendezvous technology, which can find printer queues shared by other Jaguar users.

On the RIT network, you should only see printers which are shared by others on your local network segment. That segment generally corresponds to a subnet on the campus network.

Shared printers are displayed with a pink background behind their names in the "Printer List" window.

Typically, these shared printers will be USB printers connected to a Mac. However, once a Mac OS X user turns on Printer Sharing, all printer queues on that computer are shared. There is no interface to share one printer queue but not another.

To disable the automatic display of these shared printer queues:

  1. Select "Preferences..." from the "Print Center" menu.
Jaguar Print Center preferences: Jaguar Print Center preferences
  2. Unmark the "Show printers connected to other computers" option.
  3. Close the "Preferences" window.
