Connecting to RIT's WPA Network With Windows Vista (Joined to MAIN)

  1. Click on the Start button (usually in the lower left-hand corner of your screen), and then "Connect to".




    The following dialog box should be displayed:


  2. Select "Set up a connection or network".


    NOTE: A non-broadcast network may appear in the list with the name "Unnamed Network". The RIT WPA network will not be listed in this menu.

    The following dialog box should be displayed:


  3. Select "Manually connect to a wireless network", and then select "Next".


    NOTE: If the "Manually connect to a wireless network" option is not listed in the "Choose a connection option" dialog box, make sure that your wireless network adapter appears in the "Network Connections" folder as a wireless connection and is enabled.

  4. On the "Manually connect to a wireless network" page, enter the following information:

    • Network name: ritwpa
    • Security type: WPA-Enterprise (WPA with IEEE 802.1X authentication)
    • Encryption type: TKIP
    • Select "Start this connection automatically"
    • Select "Connect even if the network is not broadcasting"

    Select "Next", and the following dialog box should be displayed:


  5. Select "Change connection settings".

    The following dialog box should be displayed:



  6. Configure the following options on the "Connections" tab:

    • Uncheck the box next to "Connect to a more preferred network if available"
    • Make sure the box next to "Connect automatically when this network is in range" is checked
    • Make sure the box next to "Connect even if the network is not broadcasting" is checked
  7. Select the "Security" tab.

    The following dialog box should be displayed:



  8. Configure the following options on the "Security" tab:


    • Deselect "Cache user information for subsequent connections to this network".
      The next time you connect to this network, you will be prompted for your RIT Computer Account username and password.
    • Select "Protected EAP (PEAP)" from the "Choose a network authentication method:" drop-down menu.
    • Click the "Settings..." button.

    The following dialog box should be displayed:


  9. Click the "Configure..." button.

    You will be shown the following dialog box:

  10. Select "Automatically use my Windows logon name and Password..." then select OK.

  11. Select "OK" on the "Protected EAP Properties" dialog box.

  12. Select "OK" on the "ritwpa Wireless Network properties" dialog box.


    A balloon pop-up near the lower right-hand corner of the screen:


  13. Click on the balloon pop-up message.


    The following dialog box should be displayed:


  14. Select "OK" to accept the certificate.


    NOTE: This dialog box can be displayed behind currently open windows and must be accepted to connect.
  15. Your computer should now be connected to the "ritwpa" wireless network.


    The following dialog box should be displayed:


  16. Click the "Close" button.
