Connecting to RIT's WPA Network With Windows XP (Joined to MAIN)
Please ensure that you have all of the latest updates from
Microsoft Update. If you are not running the most up-to-date windows
operating system patches, the menus you see may not match the ones referenced below. Additionally, 3rd party software can also alter the menus you may
see, please contact the ITS HelpDesk for assistance if needed.
These instructions assume the use of a wireless network card that is managed by the Windows XP "Wireless Zero Configuration Service." If your network card can not be managed by Windows, please refer to the documentation that came from the manufacturer of your network card to determine if and how to connect to WPA or WPA2 networks.
Connect to the RIT WPA Network
- Click Start -> Control Panel (Start -> Settings->Control Panel)

- Switch to "Classic View" by clicking "Switch to Classic View" in the upper left-hand corner (if necessary)

- Double click "Network Connections"

- Right click on your wireless card (typically called "Wireless Connection") and select "Properties"

- Click on the "Wireless Networks" tab. Ensure the option labeled "Use Windows to configure my wireless network setting" IS checked.

- Click the "Add" button in the "Wireless Networks" tab

- On the "Wireless network properties" page (Association tab), enter the following information:
- Type "ritwpa" (without the quotes) in the "Network name SSID:" text box
- Select "WPA" for the "Network Authentication" field
- Select "TKIP" for the "Data encryption" field
- Click on the "Authentication" tab

- On the "Authentication" tab, enter the following information:
- Ensure the checkbox "Enable IEEE 802.1x authentication..." is checked
- Select "Protected EAP (PEAP)" for the "EAP type:" field
- Check the "Authenticate as computer when computer information..." checkbox
- Click the "Properties" button

- On the "Protected EAP Properties page, enter the following information:
- Check the "Enable Fast Reconnect" checkbox
- Click the "Configure..." button

- In the EAP MSCHAPv2 Properties window:
- Ensure that the "Automatically use my Windows logon name and password (and domain if any)" option is checked.
- Click "OK" on the "EAP MSCHAPv2 Properties" window
- Click "OK" on the "Protected EAP Properties" window
- Click "OK" on the "Wireless network properties" window
- Look at the "Preferred networks:" area in the Wireless networks properties page, you should see an entry for the network that was just added, the entry should appear as "ritwpa (Automatic)"

- Remove any entries that refer to the network "rit"
- Click "OK" on the " Wireless Network Connection Properties" window
- Click on the balloon pop-up in the lower right hand corner of your screen

- Click "OK" on the "Validate Server Certificate" window

You should now be connected to the "ritwpa" wireless network. You should open a web-browser and attempt to visit a site like Google. If you are redirected to the website "start.rit.edu", you need to register your computer and can do so there.
NOTE: In order to prevent potential network problems commonly associated with Windows XP, in the future please ensure you physically remove any wired network cables from your computer prior to connecting to the RIT wireless network.
