Email General Information

Overview

RIT provides an e-mail address and account for all students, faculty, and staff. This e-mail account is created when you receive an RIT computer account.

E-mail addresses at RIT

Your RIT computer account has at least one e-mail address associated with it. Depending on the options you have set up at start.rit.edu, you may have more e-mail addresses. If you set up personalized (students/faculty/staff) and/or named-based addresses (faculty/staff only), these additional addresses merely point to your RIT Computer Account.

Note: Personalized and name-based e-mail addresses do not provide you with additional accounts, login usernames, or e-mail storage.

Mail Forwarding

If you have chosen to forward your RIT e-mail to a different e-mail system, then you may change your mail forwarding preferences at start.rit.edu/MailPreference. Once you set up your preference, it will allow you to forward all incoming emails from your RIT account to your preferred email account automatically.

Syncing your email preference with @rit.edu will let others who are using the campus-wide mail system to find you and send you mails, if needed. This way your email will also be listed in the on-line RIT Directory. It will also allow some official RIT mail to reach you properly, even if you aren't reading mail from the main RIT domain. This will help provide more seamless communication with the rest of the Institute.

RIT's Message Center

Message Center is an RIT application designed to manage messages sent to the campus community. It allows students, faculty, and staff to select which categories of messages that they want to receive, and how they want to read them. Your preferences can be managed by logging on the the myRIT portal (my.rit.edu) and customizing the "My Message Board" portlet. The categories used by Message Center are predetermined and only authorized users can send messages.

RIT Directory

RIT has an on-line RIT Directory that can be used to look up e-mail address for students, faculty, and staff at RIT. You can set up a mail program to use the RIT Directory, or you can search on the Web. If you are using RIT main email account, then you are automatically visible in the RIT directory.
