Exchange Mail Client Settings Quick Reference Guide
MAPI clients
MAPI clients include all versions of Microsoft Outlook -- but not Outlook Express -- on Microsoft Windows platforms, as well as Microsoft Outlook 2001 for Mac OS classic. No other mail programs are known to use MAPI at this time; if your mail program is not listed above, see the "IMAP and POP mail clients" section, below.
| Exchange server | mapi-server.rit.edu |
| Domain | MAIN (or "main.ad.rit.edu") |
| Username | Your RIT account username |
| Password | Your RIT account password |
Note: MAPI connections are only available from off-campus when you are connected through VPN. You may also use Outlook Web Access (OWA) to access your e-mail from the internet or set up your client with an IMAP connection to access your email. See the "IMAP and POP mail clients" section below for the IMAP settings.
IMAP and POP mail clients
IMAP and POP clients include:
- Microsoft Outlook Express on Microsoft Windows (see Setting up Outlook Express for Windows) and Apple Mac OS
- Apple Mail on Apple Mac OS X (see Setting Up Apple Mail)
- Microsoft Entourage 2001/v.X on Apple Mac OS X (see Setting Up Microsoft Entourage v.X; note that Setting Up Microsoft Entourage 2004 is different because it communicates with Exchange via WebDAV, rather than IMAP)
- Netscape/Mozilla mail clients (see Setting up Netscape 4)
- Microsoft Outlook -- for non-MAPI connections (see Setting Up Outlook 98 & 2000 and Setting Up Outlook 2002)
We suggest the use of the IMAP mail protocol over POP for mail clients which support both. IMAP has several advantages, not the least of which is the ability to use more than one computer to check the same RIT mailbox. This is helpful when you have a laptop and desktop computer, or an on- and off-campus computer.
A mail program—when set up for IMAP communication—will maintain a live link to your RIT mailbox. It is rare to find an IMAP mail program that does not also support an off-line mode as well as the live link to your mailbox. An off-line mode lets you read and compose e-mail even when you are not connected to the Internet — and then synchronize when you can connect again. That keeps your computer's understanding of your mailbox in step with what is currently on RIT's servers.
