Setting Up Netscape 4 for Exchange as an IMAP Account

Before You Start

  • You must have an RIT Exchange account before you can use Exchange. RIT is migrating departments to Exchange on a specific schedule, To find out more about the E-mail Replacement project go to http://www.rit.edu/its/services/email/project.html. Until you have been migrated, you should continue to use your current mail settings.

  • These instructions are for Netscape Communicator 4.78, 4.79 and 4.8 for Windows.

  • The only features available with an IMAP account is the inbox.

Check Current IMAP Settings

  1. If Netscape is your main client you should already have an account created for their VAX or OSF account. Verify the following in edit\preferences:
  2. Under ‘Mail & Newsgroups’ -- Identity
    • Includes your full-name
    • Your e-mail address is ‘xxx@rit.edu’, not ‘xxx@osf.rit.edu’, ‘xxx@vms.rit.edu’, etc. Your address should only be ‘rit.edu’
    • No reply to address is filled in
    • The organization reads ‘RIT’ or ‘Rochester Institute of Technology’
  3. Under ‘Mail & Newsgroups’ -- Mail Servers
    • Change the outgoing mail server to: smtp-server.rit.edu
    • Outgoing mail server username should be their RIT Account name
    • Use SSL should be set to ‘If Possible’
    • Highlight the current incoming server and click ‘Edit’ button
    • Check for mail every 30 minutes
    • On the ‘IMAP’ tab
      • ‘Mark it as deleted’ is selected under ‘When I delete a message’
      • Check ‘Clean up (Expunge) inbox on exit’
      • That is all that should be selected; all other boxes should have the check marks cleared. Click ‘OK’ to close the window.
  4. Under ‘Mail & Newsgroups’ -- Formatting
    • ‘Use the plain text editor to compose messages’ should be selected
    • ‘Ask me what to do if the message has HTML formatting’ should be selected in the second section
  5. Click ‘OK’ and close preferences

Make sure that LDAP is setup, if not set it up

  1. Open the Address Book by choosing ‘Communicator’ and then ‘Address Book’ from the toolbar
  2. If you do not the RIT Directory Server listed do the following:
      Click ‘File’ and then ‘New Directory’
    • Description = RIT LDAP
    • LDAP Server = ldap.rit.edu
    • Search Root=ou=People,dc=rit,dc=edu
    • Port = 636
    • Secure is checked, click ‘OK’ to close the window
    • Close out of the Address Book
  3. Setup their client to check addresses against LDAP:
    • Go to edit\preferences
    • Select ‘Mail & Newsgroups’ -- Addressing
    • Under the ‘Look for addresses in the following’ section make sure that both ‘Address Books’ and ‘Directory Server’ w/RIT LDAP from the pull-down menu are selected.
    • Under the ‘Where there are multiple addresses found’ section select ‘Show me a list of choices’

Setup the Exchange Account

  1. Click the following in edit\preferences
  2. Under ‘Mail & Newsgroups’ -- Mail Servers
  3. Under ‘Incoming Mail Servers’
    • Click the ‘Add’ button
    • Server Name = mymail.rit.edu
    • Server Type = IMAP server
    • User Name = your RIT Computer Account user name
    • Check remember password
    • Check for mail every 30 minutes
  4. Click on the ‘IMAP’ tab
    • Check the box in front of ‘Use secure connection (SSL)’
    • ‘Mark it as deleted’ should be selected
    • Check ‘Clean up -- Expunge inbox on exit’
    • That is all that should be selected, all other boxes should have the check marks cleared
  5. Click ‘OK’ to go back to the Preferences window
  6. Highlight their Exchange account and click the ‘Set as Default’ button and click ‘OK’ to close the properties window
  7. Click on their ‘inbox’ under ‘mymail.rit.edu’ in the folder list and enter their password if prompted
  8. If you receive the ‘New Site Certificate’ pop-up click ‘Next’ and then ‘Next’ again
  9. When you reach the 3rd screen select ‘Accept this certificate forever (until it expires)’ and click ‘Next’
  10. Make sure the ‘warn me’ check box is unchecked and click ‘Next’
  11. Click ‘Finish’
  12. Click on the ‘Get Message’ button if you were not prompted for their password in the previous step
