Setting up Microsoft Outlook 2001 for classic Mac OS

Overview

Microsoft Oulook 2001 is a MAPI-enabled client for Microsoft Exchange support on Mac OS classic (see Exchange MAPI and IMAP access from a Macintosh). It can also be run in the Mac OS X Classic environment on Mac OS X. Outlook 2001 is available on RIT's Microsoft Campus license agreement for RIT-owned and personal computers; it is a free download from the Microsoft MacTopia Web site.

However, Outlook 2001 can only be used with Exchange accounts. It cannot be used with IMAP or POP mail accounts, such as ones you may have beyond RIT.

Outlook 2001 supports Exchange e-mail, calendaring and event invitations, and contacts. It has support for Exchange delegation, and in fact is currently better at it in some ways that the newer Microsoft Entourage 2004 for Mac OS X (see Set up an Exchange account in Microsoft Entourage 2004). Outlook 2001 also provides additional support for Public Folders, server-side rules, and tasks. For more details on what Outlook 2001 can and cannot do, as well as how you can use it, please see our Macintosh Exchange FAQ.

Set up an account

This setup procedure requires that your computer is connected to the Internet to access RIT's Exchange servers. Preferably, you should be connected to the RIT campus network.

If you are using an off-campus Internet service provider (ISP) -- cable modem, DSL, or dial-in -- you will need to have an RIT Virtual Private Network connection. An RIT VPN connection is more difficult to set up in Mac OS classic than Mac OS X, so we recommend that you use Mac OS X if at all possible, or only use Outlook 2001 (when booted into Mac OS 9) while connected to the campus network.

  1. Launch the Outlook 2001 application.
  2. Enter a profile name, the Microsoft Exchange server name, and the mailbox name for the account in the dialog that appears. If this is not the first Outlook account on the computer, this dialog box won't appear. (While you can have multiple accounts set up in Outlook 2001, we do not yet have instructions on how to do it.)
Note: The server "mapi-server.rit.edu" is only used for clients using MAPI connections to the Exchange environment. MAPI clients include Microsoft Outlook on the Windows platform and Outlook 2001 on a Macintosh. The server "mymail.rit.edu" should be used for all other types of connections including IMAP and WebDAV.
    OutlookSetup001:
  3. Click "Test Settings" when all of the information has been added.

  4. Note: Clicking the "Test Settings" button prompts the client to access the Exchange server and verify that a mailbox with the supplied information exists. Once that account has been verified a dialog box appears saying "Congratulations! The tests were successful." If an error message appears instead, it is likely that there is a misspelling in one of the fields entered in the first dialog box, or you do not have an Exchange mailbox. If the latter is the case contact us for more help on getting an Exchange account.

  5. Click the "Create Profile" button in the dialog box that appears.
    OutlookSetup002:
  6. Enter the User name, Password, and Domain of the account that was just verified.
    OutlookSetup003:
  7. If the correct authentication information is provided, Outlook 2001 will then complete the setup process and will launch and display the user's Inbox.
    OutlookSetup004:

That's it! Outlook 2001 configures all of the other information for the account based on information provided by the Exchange server.
