Setting Up Outlook 2002 for Exchange as an IMAP Account
Before You Start
- The only features available with an IMAP account is the inbox.
Setting Up the Exchange IMAP Account
- Open Outlook XP
- Click ‘Tools and then E-mail Accounts’
- Select ‘Add a new e-mail account’ and click ‘Next’
- Select ‘IMAP’ and click ‘Next’
- Fill in the following boxes:
- Your Name = User’s Full Name
- E-mail Address = ‘Your RIT Computer Account Userid’@rit.edu
- Incoming mail = mymail.rit.edu
- Outgoing mail = smtp-server.rit.edu
- User Name = Your RIT Computer Account Userid
- Password = Your RIT Computer Account password
- Check to remember the password
- Click the ‘More Settings’ button
- On the ‘general tab’ enter RIT as the organization
- On the ‘outgoing server’ tab check the box next to ‘My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication’
and then select ‘Use same settings as my incoming mail server’
- On the ‘advanced tab’ check the boxes next to ‘This server requires a secure connection (SSL)’ under both the Incoming and Outgoing server sections
- Click ‘OK’, ‘Next’ and then ‘Finish’
- Click ‘Tools and then E-mail Accounts’ again
- Select ‘View or change existing e-mail accounts’ and click ‘Next’
- Highlight the ‘mymail.rit.edu’ account and click the ‘Set as Default’ button
- Click ‘Finish’
- When you click on the ‘inbox’ under mymail.rit.edu you may receive a warning message regarding certificates, just click
‘Yes’. You may receive this message each time you open Outlook and go to mymail.rit.edu when it’s set to IMAP.
- By default sent items are stored locally with an IMAP account in Outlook, if you want them stored on the server
you will have to manually move them to the ‘sent items’ folder on the server. When you switch to an Exchange account
your items will be stored on the server by default.
