Setting up Directory Services for Outlook 2000

  1. Click on Outlook's "Tools" menu, select "Accounts", and then click on the "Directory Service" tab.
  2. Check to see if the RIT LDAP directory appears in the list (it may be called "ldap.rit.edu"). If it already appears in the list, proceed to "Configure RIT's Directory Service Properties" below.

  1. Click the "Add" button on the right side of the dialog box, and select "Directory Services". The "Internet Directory Server Name" window appears.
  2. Type "ldap.rit.edu" in the "Internet Directory (LDAP) server:" text box.
  3. Place a checkmark in the "My LDAP server requires me to log on" box.
  4. Click "Next". The "Internet Directory Server Logon" window appears.
  5. Type the following in the "Account Name" box, substituting the word "username" with your actual RIT username:
    • uid=username,ou=people,dc=rit,dc=edu
  6. Type your RIT password in the "Password" box.
  7. Click "Next". The "Check E-mail Addresses" window appears.
  8. Select "Yes" or "No" to answer the "Do you want to check addresses using the directory service?" question. If you select "Yes", Outlook will automatically perform a search of the RIT LDAP directory whenever you compose and send a message.
  9. Click the "Next" button and the "Finish" button. Your new LDAP account appears in the list.

  1. Click on the RIT LDAP directory service to highlight it, and then click the "Properties" button. The "Properties" window appears.
  2. Rename the account, if necessary, by replacing "ldap.rit.edu" with "RIT LDAP directory" in the Directory Service Account area under the General tab.
  3. Make sure there is a checkmark in the "This server requires me to log on" box.
  4. Make sure the following appears in the "Account Name" box (substitute the word "username" with your actual RIT username): uid=username,ou=people,dc=rit,dc=edu
  5. Make sure your RIT password is properly entered in the "Password" box.
    • Note: When you perform a search of the RIT LDAP directory, you will not be prompted for your password. If your password is incorrect, no search results will appear. If you change your RIT password at some point in the future, you must also update this field with your new password in order to search the directory.
  6. Click on the "Advanced" tab. Make sure the "This server requires a secure connection (SSL)" box has a checkmark in it. When you check this box, the number that appears in the "Server Port Number:" section changes from "389" to "636". If the number does not change automatically, then change it yourself.
  7. Type the following in the "Search Base" text box. Do not use any spaces.
    • ou=people,dc=rit,dc=edu
  8. Click "OK", and then click "Close" to return to the main Outlook window.
