Setting Up Outlook 98 & 2000 for Exchange as an IMAP Account

Before You Start

  • The only feature available with an IMAP account is the inbox.

Setting Up the Exchange IMAP Account

  1. Open Outlook 98 or 2000
  2. Click 'Tools and then Accounts'
  3. Select the 'Mail' tab
  4. Click 'Add and then Mail'
  5. Enter your full name and then click 'Next'
  6. Enter 'Your RIT Computer Account Userid'@rit.edu' and click 'Next'
  7. Select 'IMAP' as the server type
    • Incoming = mymail.rit.edu
    • Outgoing = smtp-server.rit.edu
    • Click 'Next'
  8. Enter the 'user name and password', which is the same as your RIT Computer Account, check 'remember password' and make sure that 'SPA' is not selected and then click 'Next'
  9. Connect using 'LAN' and then click 'Next'
  10. Click 'Finish'
  11. Highlight the new account and click the 'Properties' button
    • On the 'general tab' enter RIT as the organization
    • On the 'outgoing server' tab check the box next to 'My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication' and then select 'Use same settings as my incoming mail server'
    • On the 'advanced tab' check the boxes next to 'This server requires a secure connection (SSL)' under both the Incoming and Outgoing server sections
    • Click 'OK' to close the window
  12. While the account is still highlighted click the 'Set as Default' button and then click 'Close'
  13. When you click on the 'inbox' under mymail.rit.edu you may receive a warning message regarding certificates, just click 'Yes'. You may receive this message each time you open Outlook and go to mymail.rit.edu when it's set to IMAP.
  14. By default sent items are stored locally with an IMAP account in Outlook, if you want them stored on the server you will have to manually move them to the 'sent items' folder on the server. When you switch to an Exchange account your items will be stored on the server by default.
