Setting Up Pine to Access Your Exchange Mailbox
Before You Start
Be sure that you have the following information and/or tools before beginning this process.- A valid RIT Computer Account
- A mailbox that currently resides on the RIT Exchange mail system.
- A functioning SSH/Telnet application for you platform (SSH is preferred here - this document was composed using an SSH client application).
- A basic understanding of the Pine email client application software installed in a UNIX environment.

Connecting to the RIT Digital UNIX environment
- Establish a connection using a Telnet/SSH client application to the following server 'grace.rit.edu'.
- Authenticate using your RIT Account username and password.
- Once connected you should see something similar to the following text:

- Now type 'pine' at the % prompt to open the Pine application.
- If this is the first time that Pine has been run then you will see a 'Welcome to Pine' greeting - to exit the greeting press 'E'.
- Now you are at the main Pine menu, which looks like this:

- Enter 'Setup' by pressing 'S'.
- Next enter the 'Config' screen by pressing 'C'.
- Scroll down to a line called 'inbox-path' and press <ENTER>.
- Replace the existing text with the following text (replacing YOURUSERNAME with your RIT Account username) and press <ENTER>:
{mymail.rit.edu/ssl/user=YOURUSERNAME/novalidate-cert}inbox - Scroll down to a line called 'default-fcc' and press <ENTER>.
- Replace the existing text with the following text (note that it is case sensitive) and press <ENTER>:
Sent Items - Scroll down to a line called 'default-saved-msg-folder' and press <ENTER>.
- Replace the existing text with the following text (note that it is case sensitive) and press <ENTER>:
Drafts - Scroll to a section called 'Advanced User Preferences' and select a sub-item called 'expose-hidden-config'. Once that item is selected press, 'X' to select it. If the section described in step 16 is not visible, it may be necessary to exit the setup screen now by pressing 'E', going back to the main menu, and then pressing 'S' then 'C' to get back to this setup screen.
- Scroll down to a section called '--- [ Normally hidden configuration options ] ---' and select a sub-item called 'rsh-open-timeout' then press <ENTER>.
- On the 'rsh-open-timeout' item enter a value of '0' (that should be a zero not the letter O) and press <ENTER>.
- Scroll back to the 'expose-hidden-config' and press 'X' to disable it.
- Press 'E' to exit setup and 'Y' to save the changes.
- Re-enter setup by pressing 'S' and press 'L'.
- You should now be at the 'Setup Collection List' screen.
- Ensure 'Mail' is selected and press 'C' to change the settings.
- For the 'Nickname:' change the existing entry to the following text and press <ENTER>:
Exchange Folders (Remote) - For the 'Server:' change the existing entry to the following text and press <ENTER>:
mymail.rit.edu/ssl/novalidate-cert - For the 'Path:' change the existing entry to nothing (a blank entry).
- The 'View:' item should not be changed.
- Press 'CTRL+X' to save the changes.
- You'll be prompted to authenticate at this point - simply type in your RIT Account username then press <ENTER> and then type in your RIT Account password and press <ENTER>.
- Select 'Y' to exit and save the changes.
- You should now be back at the 'Setup Collection List' screen.
- Press 'A' to add a new folder collection.
- For the 'Nickname:' change the existing entry to the following text and press <ENTER>:
OSF Folders (Local to Grace) - For the 'Server:' change the existing entry to nothing (a blank entry).
- For the 'Path:' change the existing entry to the following text and press <ENTER>:
mail/ - The 'View:' item should not be changed.
- Press 'CTRL+X' to save the changes.
- Select 'Y' to exit and save the changes.
- You should now be back at the 'Setup Collection List' screen.
- Press 'E' to exit setup.
- You should be back at the main menu of Pine.
At this point, all configuration changes have been made. Please verify them by selecting 'L' to display the folder list. There should be at least two entries (one for Exchange and one for OSF) and possibly a third entry for the old RIT news server. (It may be necessary to exit Pine and restart for some of these changes to take effect.)
Selecting the Exchange item should give you access to all of your Exchange server-side mail, including your inbox.
Selecting the OSF item will allow you to access mail stored on grace within your home directory only (actually within the folder called 'mail' that is in your home directory).
