Middle School Camps and Programs

Park and Ride
Annual Spring Event for 6th and 7th graders

The faculty and students are excited to offer a workshop entitled "Park & Ride: Amusement Park Design". The two-and-a-half day workshop will give girls a look into the field of engineering and how it is used in the real world. The workshop will be held this winter from December 10-12, in the James Gleason Engineering Building on RIT's campus. It is designed for middle school (grades 6 & 7) girls who would like to learn more about engineering in a hands-on environment.

Purpose — The purpose of the workshop is to increase interest among girls in the field of engineering by guiding them through a hands-on experience with an engineering project. Recent workshops have used Lego kits to create robotic based engineering projects. Participants will look at the multi-disciplinary engineering aspects of different types of amusement park rides, and then build an amusement park themed device for a competition on the last day of the workshop. This workshop gives them the opportunity to interact with female engineering faculty and female engineering students in a fun and comfortable environment. The event also includes a keynote speaker, panel discussion for the parents (Topic: pre-engineering education programs in high schools and engineering careers for women), and closing ceremony. A registration fee is required; scholarships are available and awarded based on need.
